The reason? The 56th edition of Art Basel was underway, and Vasarik was no exception to the rule.\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All year long, the art community waits patiently for the flagship Art Basel fair. Collectors, curators, and creators flood the beautiful riverside city to connect with its numerous exhibitors and soak in the vibrant, creative atmosphere that dominates the streets.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Founded in 1970, Art Basel has traversed the decades to become the powerhouse, established institution we know today. This year’s fair arrives on the heels of a highly successful season for the global art market, notably anchored by the recent spring auctions at Sotheby’s and Christie’s in New York, which brought in $2.5 billion.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While there were many powerhouse exhibitors and legacy artists dominating the booths, such as Gagosian, Hauser & Wirth, and David Zwirner\u003Cstrong>,\u003C/strong> our ears perked when Katya Kazakina, Senior Writer of \u003Cem>The Art Angle\u003C/em>, interviewed Noah Horowitz, CEO of Art Basel. While their broad discussion was deeply interesting, what we focused on at Vasarik concerned the precarious reality facing mid-tier art galleries at the fair.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is no secret that mid-tier galleries have been struggling to sell art, attract new visitors, and quite frankly, pay the bills. Horowitz explained that to alleviate some of the burdens mid-tier galleries face at premier events, a fair’s primary job is to deliver an audience, specifically, clients who will actually buy their programme. He highlighted that Art Basel implemented a sliding-scale pricing model prior to Covid, a scheme that now benefits participating galleries depending of the size of their \u003Ca>booths\u003C/a>. Furthermore, Horowitz noted that Art Basel no longer charges a flat, uniform square-foot rate for every gallery as it did in former times. Yet, booth square footage is only part of the equation; galleries are still heavily squeezed by the pricing of fundamental amenities, such as the electricity required to properly light and display their art, alongside skyrocketing shipping costs tied to volatile macroeconomic and political factors.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consequently, galleries have had to become ruthlessly selective about where they appear over the course of a calendar year. While all galleries must weather economic downturns, it is undeniably harder for mid-tier spaces whose paintings and objects don’t routinely sell for millions of dollars.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, we are noticing a shifting trend where the industry is forced to be more mindful of the survival of mid-tier galleries.
